SOME NOTES ON PISCATAQUIS COUNTY

 

 

Piscataquis County is situated in the center of the State of Maine.  Its shiretown is Dover Foxcroft, a picturesque town located on the banks of the Piscataquis River.  Geographically, Piscataquis in one of the larges counties in the eastern United States. Baxter State Park, a large wilderness preserve and home to Katahdin Mountain, is located in Piscataquis County, as is Peakes Kenney State Park, a picturesque preserve on the shores of Sebec Lake. 

Borestone Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary:  Encompassing more than 1,600 acres in Maine’s Hundred-Mile Wilderness region, Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary offers a spectacular array of natural features, including rare older forest, three crystalline ponds, exposed granite crags, and sweeping views.  The Borestone Mountain Sanctuary is open to the hiking public, dawn to dusk, year-round. Its historic lodges are only accessible to registered guests.

Center Theater for the Performing Arts:  Located in a completely restored movie theater built in the 1940's, the Center Theater Group is a non-profit organization that promotes the arts in Piscataquis County.  Plays, concerts, speakers, and movies all  offered for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to the area.

The Moosehead Marine Museum invites you to experience history. Step aboard the Katahdin for a leisurely cruise to enjoy the natural beauty and history of Moosehead Lake. A National Historic Landmark, the Katahdin, more than any other remaining piece of Moosehead's history,  takes visitors on scenic trips up Moosehead Lake.

Sebec Lake is a 14 mile long freshwater lake located  a short distance from the town of Dover-Foxcroft. It is a popular getaway area for those who love the rugged outdoors.There are plenty of things to do year-round at Sebec Lake, Maine to include fishing, hunting, canoeing, kayaking, and even snowmobiling. Fishing can be done either on the bank or by boat. The lake is stocked with fish species such as salmon, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, brook trout, and many others. If you are searching for a way to spend your 4th of July weekend, the Sebec Lake community offers attractions here as well. They have a traditional parade to commemorate America’s Independence Day along with other activities such as barbeque, horseshoes, and even road racing.
